  1. Discuss some of the moral dilemmas expressed in the novel. 
  2. Those who participated in the war are often referred to as the "Lost Generation". Discuss the validity of this and the different ways that this is portrayed in the novel.
  3. Discuss the perceptions of the Canadians as seen through the eyes of the British and the Germans.
  4. On page 235 Lizzie ponders "why was she different from any upper class girl who expected to marry well?" What do you think?
  5. There are several others who could be considered gold diggers - Jack, Sidonie, Helena, and even Daphne. Why are some more likeable than others?
  6. What is the significance of Ria's dream on page 329?
  7. What motivated Ria to return to France after happily settling into Priory Manor?
  8. How are the characters obviously products of their time? 
  9. How do the young women demonstrate their "rebelliousness" or independence?
